CBC Highlites Transport Safety Board Report

A story by the CBC entitled "High death toll in fishery flagged in Transport Safety Board report" continues to highlight the findings of the Transport Safety Board report, noting that a three-year investigation shows fatalities in Canada's fishing industry have remained high with, on average, one mariner a month being killed at sea. The piece notes fishermen remain reluctant to wear life jackets and to adopt better safety practices on water.

There is also a link to a May 16 story about a NS fisherman who fell off the deck (gunwale, according to the TSB report) of the Silver Angel and was lost at sea.

Safety in the fisheries is a focus of concern for the Workers' Compensation Board of Nova Scotia and our partners given the higher than average injury and fatality rates. We are working diligently with workplaces, Fisheries Safety Association of Nova Scotia, Department of Labour and Advanced Education and other partners to change attitudes and increase awareness about prevention and workplace safety in this industry.
