Your Rights and Responsibilities


Safety is a team effort – we all have a role to play. 

As a worker in Nova Scotia, you have legal rights to keep you safe on your job.

You have the right to:

  • To refuse work you think is not safe. 
  • To know about anything that could affect your health and safety in the workplace.
  • To take part in making the workplace safer.

You also have responsibilities:

  • To work safely.
  • To follow safe work guidelines.
  • To use safety equipment.
  • To use machinery or equipment properly.
  • To report any unsafe acts or conditions.
Your rights and responsibilities are covered in Section 17 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
